About Us

Tamalpais, Redwood, and Drake mountain bike teams are made up of members from those high schools. Together we represent all the communities of southern and western Marin County. These teams have been intertwined with the schools for two decades and are the largest and most diverse, inclusive sports on campus. Until recently the sports have been run as a club sport and home to those who may not be able to participate in traditional school sports.  We take everyone and give them a place to be proud of their school.

192 student athletes currently ride for the three high schools combined, supported by more than 60 coaches, assistant coaches, and ride leaders, most of them volunteers.

Together, these three high school mountain biking clubs are among the oldest, most accomplished, and most respected in the nation. Many high schools around the Bay Area, the state, and the nation have modeled their mountain biking teams on our clubs.

DRAKE MTB

It was a spring day in 2002, when a Drake High sophomore and Drake teacher found themselves competing against each other unexpectedly at a race infamously known as Billy Cross. It was a classic match-up of student versus master every bit as great as Vader vs. Kenobi. They fought, struggled, and even trash-talked to gain cycling supremacy at Drake High. The stakes were high and what happened on that day is the stuff of legend. Some will say that the kid showed up the master by beating him to the line. Others deny, saying the kid only had to do two laps, and the old-timer did three... perhaps not a fair comparison.

But, what we do know is from that meeting came the birth of the Drake Mountain Bike Team. In December of 2002 we had our first meeting. That spring, 8 Pirates came out to race. By the spring of 2006, Drake had earned the title of 2004 and 2006 NorCal State Champions. And, finally, in 2009 Drake won the first-ever California State Championship, the first of eight as of 2018, bringing high school mountain biking’s most prestigious honor to where it began… at the foot of Repack and Mt. Tamalpais.
